In WP Schools Chess, schools play league matches during the 2nd and 3rd term in the four teaching districts(schools must play in their own teaching district). Firstly they play in playing groups against schools in their circuit or closest circuit 5-6 schools per group. There are 4-5 matches in the 2nd term. During the 3rd schools are redrawn - also closest schools against each other. The top schools in the 2nd term will take part in the play offs during the 3rd term up to where the Western Cape teams are selected for the National Event in December (a totally government sponsored event).
The two top schools in each playing group for each age group will participate in the district play off - so teams can get recognition at every level e.g. as group winners - the top two district teams per age group will go to the WP play off to play against the other districts. The top two WP teams will play against Boland, West Coast and SWD to determine the Western Cape Top teams. (The number of Western Cape regions is supposed to change to 6 during 2014, which will change the number of teams qualifying for the Western Cape play offs.) During 2013 the Dept of Cultural Affairs and Sport sponsored one team per region of the age groups that can qualify for the Western Cape team.
Each team consists of 6 players, in ranked order. There are different age group sections that a team can compete in, but if a school does not have enough players, then you only enter for e.g. a mixed under 13 team. The age groups are:
Primary School teams
Under 9 open team(boys/girls and boys and any age 9 and younger)
Under 11 open team(boys/girls and boys and any age 11 and younger)
Under 13 open team(boys/girls and boys and any age 13 and younger)

Under 15 girls team(girls only any age 15 and younger)

Please note that only the under 13, 15 and 18 teams will go the national event, but all teams play up to Western Cape level.
